The New York School for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis
PSYCHOTHERAPY TRAINING
NYSPP is entering its thirtieth year as a chartered training institute. NYSPP recognizes that psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a major professional discipline within the mental health field and requires its own unique high quality training. The school provides a training program based on contemporary theory which integrates the perspective of psychosexual development and ego psychology with the contributions of self and object relations theory. The integration of these theories in a developmental frame of reference provides the best scientific understanding of the human mind available, and serves as a reliable guide to the effective evaluation and treatment of a wide range of patient problems.
Registration to NYSPP is open to social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and other qualified candidates. Individual interviews are designed to assist both the applicant and the School in determining the viability of the program for the student. Academic background and professional experience will be reviewed. Final decision on admission is made by the Board of Directors.
Supervision
Intensive supervision of two cases, for a total of 100 hours is a valuable way for the student to make the study of theory come alive as it is applied to the day-to-day work with patients. Students are supervised on two adult cases, 50 hours on each, with two NYSPP supervisors.
Personal Therapy
Every psychotherapist profits from an analysis or psychotherapy in self-understanding as it enhances one's ability to treat patients. Candidates may request low-cost referrals to qualified therapists who are available through the school.
Certificate Requirements
A certificate will be awarded to those students who, in the opinion of the School:
1. Satisfactorily complete the course work
2. Satisfactorily complete the required hours of individual supervision.
3. Satisfactorily demonstrate an understanding of the theory and technique of psychoanalytic psychotherapy through a formal case presentation upon completion of course and supervisory work.

PSYCHOANALYTIC TRAINING PROGRAM
NYSPP offers a training program in psychoanalysis for qualified candidates of the New York School for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, the Institute for the Study of Psychotherapy, and other applicants whose previous clinical experience and studies indicate an interest and readiness to engage in additional training. The course of study is unique in that it recognizes that those who have a solid foundation in the practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy are excellent candidates for continuing their studies to become psychoanalysts. Our focus is on deepening our candidates' understanding of human development in a Freudian framework which has been enriched and expanded to include contemporary ego psychology and object relations theory.
There are two 1 1/2 hour seminars each semester. The seminars cover the opening phase of psychoanalysis which includes the study of the transformation of a psychotherapy into a psychoanalysis, courses in the diagnostic and clinical use of dreams, elaboration of unconscious fantasy, varieties of transference, technical issues pertaining to the middle and termination phases of treatment, psychopathology courses that study the relationships between different diagnostic categories and treatment techniques, and ongoing case seminars.
Candidates must treat at least two patients a minimum of 3 times a week in a psychoanalytic process. There are 100 hours of control analysis per case with two different supervisors selected from our list of control analysts. Supervisory fees are arranged between the supervisor and candidate. A required personal analysis consists of at least 400 hours, with a frequency of at east 3 times a week with an approved analyst.
Throughout the course of study there is an ongoing evaluative process to determine satisfactory competence. A final written paper and a case presentation is required. A Certificate in Psychoanalysis is awarded at the completion of all requirements.
