The New York School for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis offers an ego structuring and object relations curriculum that deepens the craft of psychotherapy by integrating traditional and contemporary analytic theory with current clinical thinking. In addition, our students:
NYSPP
offers advanced clinical training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and
psychoanalysis. The School's psychodynamic training program provides a solid
framework from which to understand and to treat a wide range of patient
problems in a variety of settings. Becoming a psychotherapist is a rigorous endeavor involving study, practice, and self-knowledge. The NYSPP curriculum enlivens and deepens intellectual curiosity and supports sound therapeutic thinking. The faculty, through an interactive approach in the classroom, works to both explicate theory and link abstract concepts to one's clinical work. Our supervisors work collaboratively with candidates to refine clinical technique. And, very importantly, one's own personal treatment compliments course work and offers emotional support to the process of learning as well as to one's practice. The school offers a comprehensive, three-year psychotherapy training program based on contemporary psychodynamic thought, with roots in sound psychoanalytic principles. The curriculum builds on object relations theory and includes contemporary literature on separation-individuation theory, narcissistic theory, attachment theory and trauma theory. NYSPP faculty and supervisors are highly trained and experts in their respective fields who strive for a respectful, lively and safe seminar atmosphere. The candidate's independent and creative thinking is encouraged and promoted.
Upon completion of the program, students receive a Certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. NYSPP's philosophy encompasses a deep respect for the continuous and deepening process of learning and development. To that end, and building upon our core program, we offer a training program in Psychoanalysis. We invite qualified candidates of the New York School for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, the Institute for the Study of Psychotherapy, and other applicants whose previous clinical experience and studies indicate an interest and readiness to engage in additional training. Throughout the course of study there is an ongoing evaluative process to determine satisfactory competence. A final written paper and a case presentation is required. A Certificate in Psychoanalysis is awarded at the completion of all requirements. This program is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Psychoanalytic Education. Our Child and Adolescent Program is specifically designed for social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, guidance counselors, psychiatric nurses, and other mental health workers working therapeutically with children and adolescents. At NYSPP, we understand that many children and families feel overwhelmed by issues ranging from divorce, sexual abuse, domestic violence, bereavement, foster care, and other traumas. Parents are often concerned about managing matters such as sleep disturbances, attention deficit behaviors, school bullying, depression and acting out, or teen substance abuse. The clinician working with children and adolescents requires an astute understanding of developmental dynamics and the interplay of social and intrapsychic stressors. Without these tools, therapists may find themselves feeling as overwhelmed as their young clients. The NYSPP Child and Adolescent Program blends contemporary psychoanalytic theories with practical interventions to support families and children facing difficult realities. Students study infant development research and ego psychology, with contributions of object relations and other modern psychoanalytic theory. We recognize the importance of knowledge within a multicultural environment such as New York City and emphasize the role of culture and ethnicity throughout our training. Practice courses offer the opportunity to discuss clinical case material in a supportive and confidential learning environment. |
